Texas Bill To Allow The Blind To Use Lasers For Hunting

    December 11, 2006

A lawmaker has filed a bill for the 2007 legislative session that would allow legally blind persons to use laser sights, or lighted pointing instruments for hunting live animals.

“This opens up the fun of hunting to additional people, and I think that’s great,” said the bill’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Edmund Kuempel.

Presently, visually impaired people are allowed to shoot with the help of a sighted person.

“I’ve seen this on TV before, when they’re taking target practice,” Kuempel said. “When they aim the gun, the guide tells them, aim two inches higher or two inches lower and you’re on the target, and you’re off and running.”

Kuempel’s bill will give the state a Jan. 1, 2008 deadline to define the term legally blind for the law to take effect.

Under existing Texas law, laser sights, spotlights and headlights use is not allowed for hunting.
